Rapper Gravity Omutujju of
Uganda recently discussed his opinions on the ongoing controversy surrounding
the Ugandan National Musicians Federation's (UNMF) receiving of a Ugx.13
billion stimulus fund from the government in an interview with a local TV station.
Omutujju used the occasion to
counsel politician and singer Bobi Wine to behave honorably and let other
artists receive government funding without undue intervention.
Gravity Omutujju voiced his
thoughts on the subject during the interview, saying, "Bobi Wine is very
rich; he should use part of his money to build us a hospital."
In response to Bobi Wine's
ongoing criticism of the UNMF for taking the sizeable financial aid meant to
support the organization's internal goals and operations, this statement was
made.
Diverse opinions have been
expressed around the world in response to the Ugx.13 billion stimulus cash that
was given to the music federation. Various viewpoints regarding the propriety
of government funding for the arts industry have been expressed by both advocates
and critics of the issue.
The current conversation about
how politics, art, and public monies connect is resonant with Gravity
Omutujju's plea for Bobi Wine to set an example and contribute to societal
welfare. Being a well-known person in the music and politics industries, Bobi
Wine's views on these issues are highly influential and have a lot of weight.
The way Bobi Wine reacts to
Gravity Omutujju's proposal and if it changes the current discourse on
government funding for the arts in Uganda are still to be seen.
Subsequent to the ongoing
discourse, stakeholders and the general public will surely be attentively
observing the effects of the Ugx.13 Billion stimulus fund on the music industry
and the wider cultural environment.
